Short answer

Choose NordVPN if you want a polished all-round package, advanced security tools and only need to protect up to 10 devices at once. Choose Surfshark if you have a large household, want unlimited simultaneous device connections, or place more value on flexibility across many devices.

For most people, there is no universal winner. NordVPN is our stronger fit for users who prioritize its broader security ecosystem; Surfshark is the easier value choice for homes with lots of phones, laptops, TVs and tablets.

Where NordVPN has the edge

NordVPN is the better fit if you want a mature security suite in one account. Its apps combine the VPN with tools intended to reduce exposure to malicious sites and trackers, while Meshnet can create encrypted links between devices. Specialty server options may also appeal to people with more specific privacy or routing needs.

The trade-off is the simultaneous connection limit. Ten devices is enough for many individuals and couples, but a household with several people can reach it quickly. NordVPN’s long-term introductory deal can also renew at a different rate, so compare the initial total and the stated renewal terms rather than judging the plan by a headline monthly equivalent.

Where Surfshark has the edge

Surfshark’s clearest advantage is unlimited simultaneous connections. One subscription can cover a household’s compatible devices without forcing you to count active connections. That makes it particularly attractive for families, shared homes and people who regularly switch between computers, phones and streaming devices.

Its apps also include useful privacy and convenience features, although availability depends on platform and plan. Some tools are bundled only in higher tiers or sold separately. As with NordVPN, the advertised monthly equivalent on a long plan is not necessarily what you pay upfront or at renewal.

Privacy and trust

Both companies publish no-logs commitments and point to independent assessments of aspects of their services. An audit is useful evidence, but it is not a permanent guarantee: it covers a defined scope and period. We therefore consider published policies, ownership transparency, technical design and audit evidence together.

NordVPN operates from Panama, while Surfshark is based in the Netherlands. Jurisdiction matters, but it should not be treated as a shortcut for judging privacy. The provider’s logging architecture, account data, payment records and response to legal requests are also important.

Apps, streaming and everyday use

Both providers support the major desktop and mobile platforms and offer browser extensions and apps for common streaming-device ecosystems. Streaming availability changes as services update their blocking systems, so no responsible comparison can promise permanent access to a particular catalog. Check the provider’s current support guidance if one service is essential to you.

Likewise, VPN speed depends on location, server load, protocol, device and internet connection. We do not publish a fake single “speed winner.” Both providers offer modern protocols and large networks; the better real-world result can vary by user.

Which one should you choose?

  • Pick NordVPN if 10 connections are enough and you want its combination of VPN, security tools and advanced networking features.
  • Pick Surfshark if unlimited device connections are decisive or you are covering a large household.
  • Pause before buying if you only need occasional protection. Compare the full upfront charge, included features, cancellation process and renewal rate.

A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server and hide your home IP address from sites you visit. It cannot make you anonymous, stop every form of tracking, repair an infected device or replace safe passwords and account security.

How we evaluated them

We compared documented device policies, platform support, privacy claims, security features, billing terms and disclosed limitations. We did not award points based on affiliate commission rates. We periodically revisit this page because VPN features and plan terms change.
